Frequently asked questions
Ducted dehumidifiers in the UAE: sizing, noise, cost, drainage, filters, lifespan and service.
Before buying
Is a dehumidifier worth it in the UAE?
If humidity stays high indoors for months, yes. News reports from Dubai describe mould after summer holidays, water on windows in the morning and wardrobes that smell damp, all signs of sustained high humidity. A dehumidifier holds a setpoint the AC cannot, so the damage stops repeating.
Do I need one if the AC already runs all day?
Often, yes. An AC removes some moisture while it cools, but it cycles off once the room is cold and does not hold a humidity target. In one Dubai case reported by The National, the air at an AC supply vent measured 88.5 % relative humidity, so the AC was adding moisture rather than removing it.
How do I know my home is too humid?
Condensation on glass in the morning, a musty smell in cupboards, doors and gates that stick, mould on gypsum or behind furniture, and a damp feeling even when the AC is on. A hygrometer confirms it: guidance quoted in the UAE press puts the threshold for problems at about 60 % relative humidity.
Is the AC's dry mode enough?
Dry mode eases excess moisture for a while, but, as LG's own guidance puts it, it cannot usually hold a target humidity level. It also only works while the AC runs, which rules out the weeks you are away. A dehumidifier with a humidistat holds the setpoint on its own.
Will it remove mould that is already there?
No, and no dehumidifier will. Existing mould has to be removed; mouldy gypsum usually has to be cut out and replaced, as a Dubai remediation firm told Khaleej Times. The dehumidifier's job is to keep the humidity low afterwards so the mould does not come back.
Choosing a system
How many litres a day do I need?
It depends on the moisture load, not only the floor area: occupancy, showers and cooking, how much fresh air comes in, glazing and how sealed the building is. The survey measures the readings and the design works the load out. Each system's capacity, stated at the standard test condition, is on its datasheet.
Recirculating or fresh-air: which family do I need?
If the building already has a fresh-air supply, a recirculating unit dries the air inside. If the apartment is sealed with double glazing and no ventilation, a fresh-air unit brings in filtered outdoor air, dries it and recovers energy from the exhaust. Large halls, warehouses and pools need the high-capacity family.
How loud is it in the bedroom?
The compressor sits above the ceiling or in a plant room, so the sound in the room comes from the air at the grille, not from a machine beside the bed. The noise figure, the distance and the standard it was measured to are on each datasheet; we do not quote a number before that.
Does it also filter the air?
Yes. Every unit carries filter stages on the return air path, so the air that comes back through the supply grilles is cleaner as well as drier. The grades and replacement intervals are on the datasheet, and the controller shows when a filter is due.
Does it have a humidity sensor and automatic control?
Yes. A humidistat on the wall controller reads the humidity and runs the unit only when the reading is above the setpoint you choose. The controller also shows filter status and faults, and the larger systems can be connected to a building management system.
Installing
Where does the unit go?
Above a false ceiling with an access panel, usually in a corridor, bathroom or utility area, or in a plant room or garage for larger systems. It needs a route for the return and supply ducts, a plumbed drain and a power supply; the survey checks all three before the position is fixed.
Is it connected to the AC ducts?
No. The dehumidifier runs on its own return and supply ducts and is never connected into the AC ductwork. The AC controls temperature and the dehumidifier controls humidity; keeping the two separate lets each run on its own schedule.
Can it be retrofitted into a finished home?
In most homes with a false ceiling, yes. The duct runs use the existing void and grilles are added where the survey shows they are needed. A renovation or a new build is simpler because the ducts go in before the ceilings are closed.
Where does the water go?
To a plumbed condensate drain with a trap, the same way an AC indoor unit drains. There is no tank and no hose across the floor, so the system runs unattended. The survey decides whether an existing drain line can be used or a new one is run.
Who installs it and what does the process look like?
Our own team: site survey, design and sizing, installation on dedicated ducts with a plumbed drain, then commissioning with a readings report and handover. The same team returns for filter changes and service. The full sequence is on the how-it-works page.
Running costs
Does a dehumidifier use a lot of electricity?
A compressor dehumidifier draws power while it runs, but a humidistat stops it when the setpoint is reached, so the running hours are usually well under 24 a day. The rated power of each unit is on its datasheet; the running cost is that figure, multiplied by the hours run, at the DEWA tariff on your bill.
How much per month at DEWA rates?
For portable units, a UAE buying guide estimated about AED 14 to 23 a month at eight hours a day, and flagged it as an estimate rather than a measurement. For our systems we publish the measured figure per model once it is in hand, so you are not working from a guess.
Can lower humidity cut the AC bill?
Drier air feels cooler at the same temperature, so many owners run the AC a degree or two warmer once humidity is under control. How much that saves depends on the building and how it was run before; we record the readings at commissioning so you can compare bills against the same months last year.
Should it run 24 hours a day?
It stays switched on, and the humidistat decides when it actually runs. In peak summer that may be most of the day; in the cooler months it may be a few hours. Leaving it on means the setpoint is held overnight, which is when humidity rises most in sealed homes.
Maintenance and lifespan
How often are the filters changed?
The replacement intervals for each filter stage are on the datasheet and vary with how dusty the site is. The controller shows when a stage is due, and a service plan covers the changes so nothing is missed. Washable primary filters are cleaned, not replaced.
What service does it need?
A seasonal check of the drain, the coil, the filters and the readings, plus the filter changes the datasheet calls for. The service plan is quoted separately so the yearly cost is visible on its own, and the same team that installed the system carries it out.
How long does a ducted dehumidifier last?
Like an AC indoor unit, a ducted dehumidifier is a fixed installation that is serviced rather than replaced. Its life depends on the duty, the filter changes and the drain staying clear. Warranty terms per system are stated in the warranty document that comes with the quote.
What should I check before a long trip?
That the dehumidifier is on and the setpoint is set, that the drain runs clear, and that the filters are not due during the trip. Many owners leave the AC on a mild setting as well. The controller holds the setpoint for the whole time you are away.
Health and mould
At what humidity does mould start?
Guidance quoted in the UAE press puts the threshold for moisture problems at about 60 % relative humidity, especially where air does not move: behind wardrobes, inside cupboards and in corners. Holding the setpoint below that level removes the condition mould needs to grow.
Can high humidity cause allergies at night?
High humidity feeds dust mites and mould spores, which are common triggers for sneezing, itchy eyes and breathing trouble indoors. UAE residents quoted in the press describe waking with these symptoms in damp bedrooms. Drier, filtered air removes both the moisture and much of what it carries.
Why are the clothes in my wardrobe mouldy?
Closed cupboards in humid apartments trap still, moist air, and stored clothes and leather give mould a surface to grow on. A buying guide for the UAE lists musty odours and surface mould in cupboards as a common result. Lowering the humidity in the room lowers it inside the wardrobe too.
Mould is already on the walls. What should I do first?
Have it removed properly first; cleaning the surface does not fix mould on gypsum, which usually has to be cut out and replaced. Then control the humidity so it does not return. We can refer a remediation firm and size the system so both steps happen in the right order.
Property types
Villa: several portable units or one system?
One ducted system covers every room on the duct run from a single controller, with a plumbed drain. The published alternative is several portable units in the damp zones, each with a tank to empty and a compressor in the room. For a whole villa the ducted route is the one we recommend.
Sealed high-rise apartment: what works?
Double-glazed apartments keep moisture from showers, cooking and laundry indoors. A fresh-air dehumidifier brings in filtered outdoor air, dries it and recovers energy from the exhaust, so the apartment is ventilated and dry at the same time. Building management approval for the duct route is usually needed.
Hotels, offices, warehouses and pools: what do they need?
Capacity sized per zone from the moisture load, fresh-air handling where occupancy is high, and controls that can be connected to the building management system. The high-capacity family covers large halls and pools. We provide datasheets, duct and drain requirements and BOQ text for consultants.
Basement or ground-floor rooms: anything different?
Basements are cooler and naturally more humid, so they reach the mould threshold first. A return grille placed low in the damp zone and a drain route that works from below the ground floor are the two things the survey checks. The system itself is the same.
Still unsure what size you need?
Sizing is done from the moisture load, never from the floor area alone. Send us the basics and an engineer takes it from there.
Tell us the space. We size it and quote it.
Floor plan or photos on WhatsApp are enough to start. A survey confirms the rest.
