Why clothes go mouldy in a UAE wardrobe
- A closed wardrobe is still air. In a humid flat it sits above 65% relative humidity for weeks while the room reads 55–60%.
- Cotton, linen, leather and shoe insoles hold moisture and feed mould. The first sign is a musty smell, then white or grey spots.
- Wardrobes on external walls, or in bedrooms where the AC goes off at night, are the first to go.
What to clean and what to throw out
- Wash cotton and linen at the hottest setting the label allows and dry fully in the sun or a dryer.
- Wipe leather with a damp cloth and mild soap, then condition it.
- Discard anything porous that still smells after two washes. Wipe the wardrobe interior and leave the doors open until dry.
Keeping every wardrobe under 55%
- Moisture-absorber boxes and a small closet dehumidifier help one wardrobe for a while, not the flat that feeds it.
- Leave a gap behind wardrobes on external walls and do not pack shelves tight.
- The lasting fix is to hold the whole home at 45–55% with a ducted dehumidifier against musty odours and damp wardrobes. The wardrobe then follows the room.
